Finca del Niño trip

Published by emyette at 6:53 pm under Travel

We were fortunate to be able to go back to the Finca del Niño (Farm of the Child) where we volunteered as a family from 2004-2006, and spend a week reconnecting with the children, houseparents, Fransiscan sisters and volunteers still living there. Michael had a wonderful time playing with Delia, the woman who cared for him in the mornings while we lived there, as well as with other children from the orphan homes and surrounding community. He and Jacob enjoyed running around barefoot, playing soccer and climbing the small trees near the house where we had lived. Maggie learned the joys of sleeping in a hammock, and I spent my days catching up with Delia, having coffee with the volunteers, meeting the new houseparents and consulting with the social workers on some of their current projects.

While the 4 of us played, Michael-John spent his days conducting interviews for his Master’s thesis on how an organization’s mission is transmitted to its employees/volunteers, and how it plays into decision-making. Despite his heavy workload, he found time to take the boys swimming in the Caribbean sea and to play soccer. All in all, it was a great week!
